Space under the stairs is typically ignored in most houses; it can become a small nook where everything is pushed out of sight; a place where you can stuff in your magical nephew so he doesn't embarrass you; a dark, dingy space where unseen creatures lurk.
Or?
It can become a part of the experience, a quiet space of reflection.
For this house, I designed the space under the stairs as a promenade leading out into the garden. It became a space where thresholds blend with each other; a mesospace where outside and inside embrace each other in blissful harmony.
